Frequently asked questions

Why are you doing this again?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and shelter in place requirements, many small businesses have had to close their doors and workers not having jobs to earn a living. The service industry in particular has been adversely affected. We hope that by creating a way for people who have been impacted less by this pandemic to easily give back to those who are struggling, it can help mitigate some of the impact.

Who is this for?

If you are a service industry worker of any type who has been impacted by COVID-19 and could use some extra funds, feel free to add your name to this site so that people can have an opportunity to give back.

How does it work?

This site allows service industry workers impacted by COVID-19 to create a posting on this site that includes their Venmo account and optionally their industry, location, and a short bio. When someone looking to give comes to the site, they will be shown a random posting, sorted by an algorithm of oldest posting first to be as fair as possible. The person giving can then be linked to that person's Venmo account and pay however much they can. This site collects no data about those who give, how much is given, or anything related to the Venmo payment.

If I make a posting on the site, will someone Venmo me?

Ideally yes, but we can't make any promises. The more people visit this site, the more likely the odds of recieving some funds from a kind stranger looking to give back.

Will my posting disappear after someone gives?

After a funder views a posting on Fork Over, the posting is sent in the back of the queue. We don't track if someone actually pays on Venmo or not.

Who made this site?

This website is not affiliated with any specific group, organization, or company. We're just a few folks based in the Bay Area of California that love and appreciate service industry workers and are looking to help out in this time of need. If you need to get into contact with someone about this site, please email support (at)

Are the people on the site vetted in any way?

No. People in need must confirm their email address before adding their Venmo on Forked Over, but we want to ensure that as many people get the funding they need with as few barriers as possible. If you believe there might be something fishy going on, email us at support (at)

What else can I be doing to help?

First and foremost, by all means neccesary, stay home. That's the biggest thing you can do to help. Beyond that, and giving on this site, try to order take out from your favorite local restaurant every now and again, try to buy gift cards from places online, and see if there are local community groups rallying to help those in need.
